It's also briefly mentioned in The Printer's Grammar as being something common to Dutch printers. Silver type was apparently thought of being much neater for printing

Wow that is infuriating - the letter I'm looking at makes reference to Silver Type 'named presumably for its finery', but clearly nothing that gets preserved through photocopy->microfilm->ECCO

I think its a reference to the material of the type, rather than the colour? So letter type made of silver
