Trying to work out if I can go to a client meeting in Newcastle. The train is coming out at almost £300. And that's with the advanced fare discount on the return trip. Absurd.

It did help. But split tickets actually turned out to make the biggest difference - with that option Newcastle and Sunderland were the same cost pretty much. It's all so confusing.
Gosh yes that's a mix of factors - basically the price up to York is better value due to the competition with the London-Sunderland route. I did a talk on this last year, a lot of it is caused by honouring old british rail ticketing rules but with the past 30 years of private operators.
