it's always funny when gamers / general game devs get into visual novel dev and
1) shoehorn game play into VNs because it "needs" it
2) assume VN players hate reading??
it's so painfully obvious they don't understand the essence of visual novels when they think we hate reading & *need* gameplay

Umineko is really popular in vn space and it literally just reading lol
For 99% of it it's very much kinetic
The only thing is it has to be done well and with intent.
You shouldn't just shove interactive elements in your turn-based game because you think JRPG combat is boring.
It's like ONLY rolling dice in D&D
"we're giving players a break from reading"
"gameplay lets the player interact instead of reading"
"we don't want to bog the player down with lots of words"
hint: VN players WANT TO READ!
And if you’re including mini games, make them optional. Nothing I hate more than trying to work out an arbitrary puzzle to get more of the story.
The gameplay segments in that not only serve the narrative, but the *style* of gameplay (Ace Attorney courtroom discussions by way of a first person shooter) fits not only the game's style, but also the pace and narrative from the VN segments.
Say what you will about DGR as a series, but I still hold it up as one of the best examples of incorporating "gameplay" into a visual novel.
Like yeah, sure, MAYBE some people will get really invested in your Fall Guys knockoff, but that's... not why anyone is buying your game...?? 😭
about authors who don't read romance and don't like romance as a genre but try their hand at writing romance by removing all the things that romance genre readers love.
"you mean a tragedy?"
"no its a romance"
Danganronpa is a series that does it really well, so does AA
they’re just not VNs.
I have found most devs are not motivated to make "XYZ but with vampires". So maybe they're trying something different and hoping it resonates.
