Most of the followers I get are fake ... some only have one post, an ad. Others have 4 or 5 posts, enough to seem normal if you don't scroll down. They are like FB friend spam - "recently widowed doctor" and so forth.

Are there any posts of yours that went viral enough a while back that you muted notifications on them? Maybe check the "Mentions" view to see if you recently got a bunch of pushpin-emoji replies.

I know that's what happened with me when a post of mine suddenly went viral again 8 months later.

I'd also be getting like/repost notifications, and I didn't have any of those. But I did get added to a list - in fact a list I wanted to be added to - old liberal gamers. :) So mystery solved.

Which is why I asked specifically about old viral posts you might have muted notifications on. BlueSky became unusable when my "Pro Publica has a site to make insurance co. letters" post went viral until I muted that post. Muting stops all of those.

I am too except for that one post, that was then rediscovered after Mangione did his thing.

Now I have 1K followers and I don't know why.

I don't know what people who started following me in December because of that post were thinking, when basically I was just posting Advent of Code stuff.

I always wonder why someone chooses to follow me. I peek at their profile (and when obvious I should, just block, though that is much less often here than at the other place) but usually still have no idea. It's fine, maybe nice even, just hard to know when to follow back w/o any actual interaction.

Makes sense (starter pack). 38 is a lot in such a short time, unless posting something that got lots of attention (which it seems you didn’t).
