My childhood birding mentor taught me how to mimic their call to attract other small birds, because they’d show up to bully the little guys if they heard the call :(

I’d never do it now, bc it’s frowned upon, but it was neat to know how to do it

Yeah if they make any noise it definitely draws in the song birds. One of the easiest ways to find owls is to listen for mobbing birds. Crazy that they get mobbed by something they are happy to hunt and eat though. I guess there's power in numbers.

Safety in numbers, exactly! We’ve had a murmuration of at least two types (probably 3, but it’s been very hard to pinpoint for certain) of small birds around this past 2 months (Mountain chickadees, Bushtits, and *probably* pine siskins) and they’ve kept each other safe (Vancouver Island)

It's a Sigma 150 - 600mm contemporary. It's known as a relatively affordable (for lenses) wildlife lens and I've been pretty impressed with it.

What an adorable little bird! It always amazes me that birds can sit atop a single stalk or small limb, always maintaining their balance!

I've also seen them do it with one foot at a time too. Crazy balance! It's also one thing when a small bird like a pygmy owl does it, but when a great grey does it on a tiny branch it looks impossible.
