@jonnelledge.bsky.social Ok, I can actually answer this. There's an incentive structure called "C-MeX" where random customers are asked what basically amounts to a market research question, and water companies get bonuses for doing well in them.

Advertising helps with those scores

Yes! Partly because the first question is literally "What is the name of your water company?", which a surprisingly large number of people can get wrong.

And because C-MeX has been costing Thames Water tens of millions of pounds per year for years, it’s worth throwing a bit of money at it to see if they can get up to 17th or even 16th in the ranking.

Although, if I was them, I’d spend that money on ruining the scores of other companies. Just go after a few small ones. The C-MeX ranking doesn’t care how big each company is. Just don’t get caught or the other companies will hate you.
