I think it's important to remember that until fairly recently, in popular usage, gender was just a more "polite" term for sex; essentially a euphemism. Many people who grew up in a time when they were functionally synonyms don't understand the distinction.

These are also people who fundamentally believe that men and women have distinct, complementary (perhaps equal in value but certainly not identical) roles to play in society. They do not understand that these roles are themselves social constructs and believe they are biologically determined.

I support keeping female sports exclusively for girls & women and male sports for boys & men. There are definite biological differences between them at most stages of life.

Otherwise, make sports co-ed and group competitors by height, weight and overall ability in the sport in question.
