It’s malignant narcissism run completely rampant. The man’s estimation of his own abilities (and the abilities of the neo-Nazi twerps who worship him) is almost limitless. If he decides the attorney who keeps drunk pilots out of the air is expendable, then it clearly is so.

it's Peter Longerich. Goebbels kept an extensive diary which had not previously been available, so a lot of it is kind of working through the diary to nail down decisions/figure out where goebbels was lying, etc.

towards the end of the war he kept demanding "total war" by which he meant that basically everyone should be sent to the front and there should be no luxuries. this kept causing problems like, who is going to make munitions?

Total war was more about marshalling the economy around war. The concentration camps were a big part of that effort as they were where raw materials were extracted and eventually where munitions were made (as the nazis relaxed their security policies for the sake of waging a three front war)

the big difference was that Hitler seems to have more or less realized that Goebbels was full of shit and kept him well removed from war planning and decision making (he kept kneecapping goebbels total war plans.)
