Because it replicates the more lucrative model of television---particularly old-school live TV with unskippable ads? Plus video is more attractive to advertisers vs. plain audio?

From actual users and creators' standpoints, yes, "pivot to video" without an actual non-monetary reason is "meh." But video (and algorithms) seem to be driving a lot online, unfortunately...

Also, if newspapers and magazines want to start "TV shows" on YouTube, I really don't care. But why are they calling them "podcasts"?! It's like if news broadcasts on network TV insisted on referring to itself as "radio." So bizarre.
