“For us, critique is service. We critique because we care.” — @abeba.bsky.social & @rajiinio.bsky.social (2022) irisvanrooijcogsci.com/2023/01/29/c...

We wrote a paper about why such practices are not only pseudoscientific and unethical, but should also pay off financially on a par with consulting tarot cards: www.cell.com/patterns/ful...

I used to feel guilty about not finishing video games. Now, I embrace it. Life is short. My time is precious.

Judith Butler: "Once you decide that a single vulnerable minority can be sacrificed, you’re operating within a fascist logic, because that means there might be a second one you’re willing to sacrifice, and a third, a fourth, and then what happens?"

God bless those labels!

At this point, journalists have to seriously consider not using Twitter anymore, in my opinion. (I stopped tweeting in November, for what it's worth.) I get why many are still over there -- but we all have to question why we are helping a platform that actively demonizes and censors us.

It is so *weird* living in a new reality that most people can't even see. Million of people think they're still living in a world that no longer exists. Wildly disconcerting times.

Yikes.

Every day, terrible things happen, and we are told not to pay attention to them because they are just distractions from other presumably more terrible things happening that we are too distracted to notice. What is this insanity?

Anybody have some useful Bluesky labels to suggest? I recently added the Jesse Singal follower label and it's been great for identifying people/posts that are just not worth engaging with at all. Any others you'd recommend?

"It simply doesn’t track that ideas that helped Democrats win over three cycles can be blamed for their loss in the year they disavowed them." The false narrative that wokeness is to blame for centrist parties losing is pervasive in Canada too, where we have an election coming this year.

I'm seeing a lot of posts about clever alt text. This is an accessibility feature. You're supposed to include a description of the image, not jokes in there! Put your jokes in the post, not the alt text.

LOL. Maybe you'll think you're outperforming them, but that's because you won't have the expertise to be able to tell that the material the LLM is outputting is full of mistakes or sometimes just completely made up. Sooner or later, it will catch up with you.

This was in my feed yesterday but I didn't repost it cause I assumed it was a bad parody.

One of my least favourite type of post on Bluesky is the "this made a lot of people upset" self-quote, and then you click on the original post and 2 people were mildly critical.

Jesus Christ. Another newspaper just sold out. This is demoralizing.

I'm sorry, I missed the memo on replacing "brown-bag lunch" with "sack lunch."

The zizian cult news is ringing so many alarm bells for me in terms of moral panics. Led by a trans woman, killed a border cop, anarchist, members wear black trenchcoats, protests against landlords, vegan... what?! It sounds like right-wing paranoid fantasy. Is there any solid reporting on this?

I said I was resisting talking about my personal knowledge management system, but all I needed was a gentle nudge to launch into a thread discussing it. It's here if that interests you. Might write a proper piece about it later with better examples. #pkm #obsidian

I am reading @mmccnn.bsky.social's book Park Cruising and it is nothing short of life affirming! I'm a little more than halfway through. Beautiful writing. Thorough research. Clear argumentation.

NPR has lost all credibility. This kind of reporting should not be tolerated. I hope people start cancelling their donations.
