i grew up in a tiny nebraskan town next to what used to be a WW2 german POW camp that still has this commemorative sign and even as a kid it struck me as a little uhhhhh

There were over 1,000 camps throughout the U.S. Only 2 states did not have camps. (I lecture about the POW camps for historical societies/conferences/etc.)
My great uncle made lifelong friends with two Nazis who worked in a pow camp in Georgia. Always thought it was bizarre but he'd talk about them like they never wanted to fight for Germany and that America was a blessed escape. War is weird.
There's something kind of comical about the idea of a German guy from Dusseldorf getting captured on the battlefield in northern France, and then getting hauled to Nebraska
i thought about that all the time. the rest of the world felt so far away to me out there. must have felt doubly so for a hitler youth grad but, hey, apparently they made friends.
