This is backed up by what Frost and Lynch’s writing process was for The Return, according to interviews, at least. It definitely seems like The Return from a writing perspective is much more Frost’s baby than it is Lynch’s.

Honestly I doubt it. I mean it was for ABC! Yes, this is post-Ellen, but also, post-Ellen means like Will & Grace, not a show about two lesbians on prime time network.

Although, like other shows of the era, it may have leaned into lesbian coding and then became more lesbian over time.
