I think TV has the potential to operate just like books (or serials, obviously) and can be whatever length of “chapters” it should be. 6, 8, 10, 15, 22.
Also, why not try changing episode counts between seasons as the story necessitates. We could be using the medium to pace stories more creatively!
I totally agree. I watched one show with only 8 episodes. Pacing was fine until the last 2 episodes. Felt like they forgot how many episodes they were supposed to have & just rushed the storyline ending. Other shows with too many episodes end up with filler episodes that do nothing for the show.
Dude (tte?), Brazillian, Mexican, Egyptian, Chinese, Korean, etc etc novelas have new eps literally every day. America didn't even do that better, yall just don't consume media from other countries.
Honestly I’m not a fan of the long seasons and end of year cliffhangers. I much prefer the British or even South Korean model of single shorter self-contained narratives wrapped up in one season. Shows are just better when you have a story arc that is held to.
Yeah, but now seasons are 10 episodes that still somehow have filler episodes, still end on cliffhangers, with year-plus gaps in between. It’s over too soon.
Long seasons are ok if the overall story is engaging. I do agree that the British know how to make tight show seasons. Copper season 1 for example was great. Season 2 with more episodes just flopped.
And frankly I get bored after a while. The show has to be really, really good for me to want to slog through 20 plus episodes in one season. Binging 10 episode seasons is one thing but 20 is too much
