Yes, I've seen a good deal of his ouvre. He's going to have an uphill battle doing a faithful adaptation of a fascist book without making a fascist movie

The guy is clearly talented. District 9 is a personal favorite. Why he wants to take on this one is baffling to me. Part of the appeal of District 9 is its take down of both apartheid and big corporations (with government ties). Starship Troopers, as a novel, isn't consistent with those themes.

Didn't we all just have an arguement about how the 90s film was too subtle, so a "more faithful" reproduction of the book would allow for more obvious parallels to be drawn, from a filmmaker who has shown they want to use allegory and metaphors to shine light on evil fucks?

The thing is that I don't think Heinlein's original book itself is a fascist text... but I don't know if you can make a good movie OF that book WITHOUT making it a satire of fascism, which Verhoeven completely got.

I personally don't think it's quite that simple but I don't think saying "this dude was a piece of shit" is wrong, either. And I definitely don't think Starship Troopers is the place to make a case for any defenses of the man's body of work.

I liked District 9, Blomkamp can make a good movie, but in addition to being a tribute to Heinlein's love of fascism the book also just isn't very good. It's boring as hell. One for the piracy list if it sounds worth watching at all.
