I worked in an Apple dealership in the late 80s. One of our technicians got a call about smoke coming out of her Mac and he asked the woman who called, "Was it white smoke or black smoke." She replied, "White smoke." He told her, "Congratulations. You've elected a new Pope."
ok i have a 1984 model. you have to completly tear down and clean it. you can search for blastes transistors and fix it. the motherboard could be full of dust.
😂 my freshman year in college, I worked at my university library. They set up a “lab” with about 20 of these - brand new. (Now you know my advanced age! )
I remember seeing these in the US in the mid 90s. Seemed a cool thing to own back then, but at that point I had no idea I’d be using a Mac for most of my career!
The machine has yellowed with time, (and nicotine) ;-). Some of us are old enough to remember how yellow walls become due to indoor smoking. Young people don't.
Disclaimer: I am implying that people might have smoked around it, not that the current people using it are smokers.
In the early 80s my mother ranted in gross offence after we left someone's place because they asked her not to smoke inside. "it's fine in hospitals" she ranted.
I remember a bar in the old town of Geneva. I would feel my eyes stinging from the smoke. I found that I needed to take a shower to clean the nicotine off, before I felt better. That was a different era, and yet it's less than 20 years ago.
I remember! There was no smoking around this machine, but it’s old and seen better days. We will see how well we can bring back to life with new capacitors and a good clean with H2O2.
It's not hard to do! At minimum, you'll need a soldering iron and a multimeter. You'll find lots of YouTube vids on how to replace the caps. And you'll have to order them, Mouser Electronics is a good source. The electrolytics are likely the source. Open it up right now and remove the battery!
Back in the 80s, I did user support for an early office system. I got a call from a user saying her VT100 (yeah, I’m old) was smoking - was that right?

If you change the capacitors inside it ‘ll probably be fine.
I'll see myself out.
Patient: I don't know. I've never looked.
Users cry for it, chips die for it.

Um, no.
