Bravo for articulating the stakes. As a cis and almost-het man, I benefit from the status quo, but I would rather share society more fairly with women, with non-binary people, with all my fellow humans.The benefits would exceed the loss of relative status.

It's why trans people need to be "crazy". Because any sensible person must obey the natural hierarchy. Not doing so is itself seen as a sign of mental illness because otherwise you wouldn't question your proper place...

Also speaks to a deep lack of empathy. The first time I truly understood what trans and intersex ppl were, my response was empathy— how confusing and scary to feel that the physical didn’t align with one’s sense of self. Like, how isn’t that every human’s response?

Literal answer to your question: AFAIK, the empathy response can get suppressed under a variety of circumstances, such as during a physical fight. Othering is an all too common phenomenon. I'm glad that you had the response you did, that your response, even to an abstract category, was empathetic!

Oh, I know othering is out there, and very real, unfortunately. It just feels so foreign to me in this specific case, bc I can remember explicitly the “aha” moment for me of, “that would feel so strange and frightening,” and that was that.
