It's a Christmas movie the same way E.T. is a Halloween movie: it just happens to take place around a holiday, but that holiday has no effect on the plot of the movie.
Because chuddish white men wanted to have their own holiday tradition without any of the stuff that makes normal holiday traditions feel Gay or Womanly
It's a Christmas themed action movie. They release them to theatres during the holidays, and is the best time to watch them. Also, Gremlins and Batman Returns are good ones if you want more for the season.
It actually is Christmas themed, they have a Christmas party and everything while even the main premise is him to California for Christmas to see his wife
It's coincidental to move the story along, it doesn't actually mean anything to the plot. It could have been a celebration over quarterly earnings and it would have been the same outcome.
I genuinely think a lot of people just say it’s a Christmas movie because action Christmas movies are unusual and people probably just think it would be interesting or funny if die hard was one
Any movie that takes place during Christmas where the majority of scenery is Xmas themed, run time takes place entirely on Xmas Eve/Day, merry xmases are exchanged, or stereotypical xmas related phrases are uttered are Christmas movies
Because people have a warped idea that being around christmas makes it one. It is an action movie released in the summer of 1988. All subsequent ones after the second were not around that time. Thus, further proof it is an action movie in a series of action movies.
Shane Black sets a lot of his action films during the holiday - Long Kiss Goodnight, Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3 - and also, as someone else stated le reddit updoots
IMO, calling Die Hard "a Christmas movie" is like calling The Imitation Game "a war movie". That's when the movies are *set*, sure, but that's not really what they're about.
But if people want a holiday tradition of watching Die Hard -- hey, its a great movie. Go for it. 😎
I'm just saying if you asked somebody "hey there's a new war movie out, want to see it" and then took them to see Benedict Cumberbatch talking about crytography for two hours, they would probably be annoyed with you.
Because people are irony poisoned. Nobody who is seriously into Christmas thinks Die Hard is a Christmas movie. If you made a supercut of every moment in Die Hard where there’s anything remotely Christmas related happening in the frame, visually or music-wise, it would mayyybe be ten minutes long
It takes place at Christmas time, there's Christmas music, talk about Christmas miracles. Its as much a Christmas movie as any Hallmark movie that involves some lady in a cookie contest battle with a hot rural baker after her city slicker fiancée dumps her.
Die Hard is actually sort of an Anti-Hallmark Christmas movie. Which sort of makes it a Christmas movie.
And "yippee ki-yay MF" is straight out of the Night Before Christmas, the part where Santa takes off in his sleigh. I think. Maybe not. But it should be.
Because people don’t understand the college football season is over several weeks before Christmas Eve, so the guy pretending to be the doorman couldn’t have £50 on USC / Notre dame.
🎄It‘s set during Christmas
🎄 his wife is named “Holly”
🎄it has a theme of reconciling with family for Xmas
🎄 he puts a Santa hat on one of the guys he kills!
It takes place at Christmas, a major part of it is a Christmas party, the only reason the character is in town is for Christmas. And he writes Ho Ho Ho on a corpse
Any movie is a Christmas movie if you want it to be just watch what you like when you like it's 2024 this argument has been talked about for 30 years like stop just watch what you want

I can STILL hear my mom throwing around quotes from it in her worst-impression-possible voice 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️

If it being an Xmas movie is the excuse you need to watch a good movie around the holidays nbd, but people take it waaaay too seriously.
- Loaded with Christmas Iconography (Trees, Decorations, etc).
-Basic plot about a Man trying to reconnect with his Family for Christmas
- *Corpse with a Santa Hat*
- Heavy Use of Christmas Music
- Being Personal: 1st time I watched it was during Christmas
It's less of a Christmas movie than "Gremlins", imo.
