Last month, the so-called American Academy of Sciences and Letters gave a medal to Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, who advocated for mass COVID infection. NY Post framed it as a “top award.”

We looked into it. AASL is 2 years old—part of a right-wing dark money network trying to transform elite universities.

In India its growth was driven by academics at provincial institutions sidelined in an increasingly polarized higher education landscape in which a few elite institutions captured most of the resources and prestige, while the rest were starved by austerity and increasing precariousness and neglect.

These right-wing institutions provided conference venues, journals and awards otherwise gate-kept by academics at the elite English-dominated institutions. Eventually, under the Modi state, ideologues who came through this alternative pipeline took over the mainstream academic institutions.

If anything US academia is even less equipped to fight back. Elite universities are basically hedge funds with a side gig in education. The adoption of “neutrality” is already a signal they will pose no institutional barrier to this process. State universities in blue states is the only bulwark.

I can absolutely see a similar collapse of Ivy League universities compared to places like JNU and Ashoka playing out even faster. The congressional hearings and its aftermath was a very very bad signal of institutional resilience and the right is well aware of it.
