I translate technical reports for a living, and an editor from one agency told me off for using hyphens instead of en-dashes.

I also translate the same kind of reports through a different agency, and they (and the end-client) don't seem to mind - or maybe they haven't twigged on yet 😜

Honestly I don’t think most people know the difference between an em- en- or hyphen, and why should they? :)
