I recently visited the ALMA observatory in Chile. While I was poking around the telescopes, ALMA researchers released amazing new views of planet-forming disks around young stars. These are the most detailed images yet of new solar systems being born. 🧪🔭 public.nrao.edu/news/exoalma/

Random phrase of the day: 豚(ぶた)もおだてりゃ木(き)に登(のぼ)る= "Even a pig can climb a tree with some encouragement." Someone can achieve above their low level of ability if they're properly encouraged. おだてる seems to be often translated as "flatter" but I think "encouragement" works better here.

I would like to recommend some manga for my 6 year old English niece (technically little cousin, but you know). I'm pretty familiar with manga in general, but much less so with stuff for young kids and NO IDEA what's been translated and currently in print and available in the UK. Any suggestions?

Reminder that there is a ton of free public domain Japanese literature available on the Kindle platform. And you can access it via the Aozora app if you don't want to support Amazon. I checked out an Edogawa Ranpo story today.

If you can believe it, I have some good news: My translation of "Tumbleweed" by Ao Omae is included in Best Literary Translations 2025 from @deepvellum.bsky.social, which goes on sale April 29 😭🥳 Thank you so much to @kenyonreview.bsky.social for originally publishing the story and submitting it 💖

I think n-dashes are bullshit, just use a hyphen. If n-dashes are all that, where's the n-dash key on my keyboard? That's right it's not there because no one wants it. If bill gates wanted us to type fancy he would have put those characters on our keyboards.

I've been reading more about Japanese generally lately, so a book on both Japanese *and* translation was an obvious pick. Overall, I found the execution a bit messy, but thinking about how translation can change language and impact our views of gender was really interesting for me to think about.

Your Cherokee words for today. The top word is English followed by how it is written in the Cherokee language followed by how it is spelled in English then how to pronounce it phonetically.

It's also important to understand the context of some definitions. You might translate one word 2 different ways depending on the context. Just because "fireplace" is translated as いろり, it doesn't necessarily fit the Santa Claus context as いろり refers to a firepit in the middle of the room.

If you want to get better at translation, get into the habit of looking stuff up. Look up word definitions in JP-JP, JP-EN, and EN-EN dictionaries. Look up images a word might be connected to. Look up weird phrases and word combinations. Don't just assume you're right. Always double check.

❦ The Great Japan Instant Curry Review Thread 🧵 The instant curry section of a Japanese grocery store is a sacred space of affordability, convenience, & yumminess. As a gourmand in these parts, I will post my brief, unvarnished opinions. ☞ Ratings out of 10. A ⁵⁄₁₀ is good, though not exceptional.

The expression 首を長くして待つ is so evocative and fantastical. Your neck stretches out further and further, growing longer with every second, as you eagerly seek out the arrival of a hotly anticipated someone or something until you are some kind of mythical snake creature.

"Wait. She put the hamburger in *blood*??" I ask myself and wonder if I unknowingly picked up a horror novel. One of these days I will stop mistaking 血 for 皿, but apparently today is not that day. #AmReading

Enjoyed spotting this beautiful lemon kanji (檸檬) in the wild on a trip to Onomichi. They love their Setouchi lemons over there.
