Your whole argument hinges on your belief that I have an irrational fear of China that you can exploit. That I feel differently about TikTok having my data than I do about the 5000 other platforms all around the globe (whom China could buy said data from). I don't. Nor does anyone on TikTok. 3/3

The data stealing arguments are a lot less compelling to me than the propaganda ones; that they have a black box algorithm that could manipulate us and our discourse and we would never know. But given how much our system feels like greed-based oligopoly right now, I'm having a harder time caring

I don't disagree. But the US has a free press that has even the slightest chance of uncovering that manipulation, and that counts for something. And I already take everything I read on Twitter with a pillar of salt anyway

Don't think the press is a free as it should be. Isn't all local news channels owned by one company. Print media in a much the same.
I honestly think real journalism died year's ago.
I dumped Twitter when the immigrant bought it and just after dumping Meta. Only on here at the moment.

What's exponentially worse than that data being sold is that anyone who is merely in on the bidding has access.

Police departments in USA are buying collected data from info gatherers to avoid filing subpoena. If USA law enforcement can do it legally, so can other foreign actors. Privacy as we knew in pre-google era does not exist anymore. Every law trying to address this issue is just eyewash for plebes.
