Despite decades of American cultural indoctrination. I will NEVER get used to "pet your dog", or to broaden it: "pet your pet". It just doesn't make sense. Why did it change from "pat" to "pet"? Is "pet" not used to describe a domesticated animal?
I would define Pat as more of a soft slapping action where pet is more of a rub.
I did some searching and it was pretty ambiguous when pet (verb) started being used but some claim it was before the US became a thing. I'm a bit doubtful of that though. Might be conflated with the noun.
That is quiet interesting. Though I can't recall hearing an American use "pat" at all. May be my memory. Could be rarely used. It is a strange thing. I wonder, perhaps it became missplelt due to pronunciation/accent. Like the recent phenomenon of people misusing "then" as a substitute for "than".
My guess is that people have started to use "then" because it can be difficult to discern the difference between "then" and "than" when the words are not sufficiently enunciated, which I think happens more than it used to. I know a guy whose accent makes the distinction unclear.
How can you not? My dog plays with me like that in the video. I always have to be prepared for her surprise attacks. So I look at this and all I can see is that it is possible to pet the dog.
And so begins the search for a weapon or glitch that has an animation that sort of looks like you are petting something and then the challenge of positioning ones player in such a manner that it seems we *are* petting the dog.
