"Fear of tarring children with these labels once kept numbers down, are we now applying them too liberally?"
No. We are not. 😐
"It has also left a group in the cold: children who are not high functioning, who have limited communication and who struggle with daily life"
No. We have not.* You have.

I might be wrong, tho.
I blocked them. Benefit of the doubt is for other websites.
that’s why I taught kids, not a subject

I remember 20 years ago someone told me about a non-speaking Autistic adult making youtube videos about their experience and I thought it was a hoax
I was ignorant AF
It's time we all grow up
"They" want us silent and invisible.
Had to point out it's a completely different, unconnected system for adults, here. And maybe those adults are also really struggling... 🤷
Compassion is an infinite resource. There are finite resources, and those need reallocation, but compassion isn't one of them.
This is a wonderful program for young adults with goals of employment and independent living.
This INFURIATES me!!! When my son was diagnosed in the early '90s, next to NO ONE understood. Finally, neurodivergence is getting the recognition it needed.
Oh man, can I ever relate! I immediately went looking for information. The first two books I found broke me. First was by Leo Kanner and he blamed mothers being too cold. The other was by a dad whose son regressed. I felt completely alone and helpless.
No, I haven't. My son is now a grown adult and completely self-sufficient. But I will definitely look up that book. If I'm informed, it helps me to help others, especially those who have newly diagnosed children.
Really engaging with wonderful anecdotes and a lot of peer reviewed evidence to boot *chefs kiss*
signed,
an Autistic adult who struggles MUCH more than is outwardly evident
but also - yay Charlene!
"Profound autism” doesn’t give us any actionable information about why a person needs support or what support they need. It doesn’t tell us if a person has speech apraxia or complex medical needs, or if the person needs access to AAC or specific mental health supports."
I am perpetually baffled at the people who get angry when the world is made more accessible.
And they get very angry when that is contradicted.
😤
We are ALL struggling with daily life MARTHA!
That is what we are desperately trying to express!
Some of those children are OUR children
We are fighting for our place at the table so that we can lift them up with the support they deserve
In your care they get ABA. Enough said. 🫠
I’m glad you’re here. 🫶🏻
Not forcing them to experience sensory and social waterboarding when they don't have to has been essential to their mental well-being
Not acknowledging Autistic adults serves to further harm Autistic kids
But it's emotional reactivity. And it's misplaced.
They're afraid. And they're ignorant. I hope they smarten up.
We are not
Autistic adults they loathe most are the ones who need their shared resources the least
We want compassion and kindness
We want to help redirect the efforts to HELP kids
& it’s maybe bc we have the tools to tell them they need to face that they hurt us
It’s so ego-dystonic to believe you’re hurting someone you love
I’m sorry folks
But you’re hurting someone you love
Medicaid benefits are NOT. They are LIMITED.
And they're being wasted on 'therapies' that actively harm children
MAYBE starting to listen to adults telling us it hurt them would be wise
Autistic children are at a >28x risk of dying by suicide
I don't have it bookmarked, but I can find the study again if I need to
That risk goes up when kids are unidentified
And so yet another reason why the idea of "over-diagnosis" is horse shit.
Calling me high-functioning is an insult and dismissive of my internal struggles.
And also - Hello! I'm part of the medical community willing to diagnose autism spectrum disorder as per the DSM-V-TR!
There are others like me. Not enough, probably.
I also think responsible self-ID is amazing and valid and doesn't require meeting DSM criteria. 🌈
Its like if Inquisitor Torquemada wrote "The Good Jew Heretic".
*sigh*
Once again bluesky we are politely asking you for an edit function. My AuDHD flares hot with my impulsivity-related typos.
Maybe high support needs but...we all need a lot of support in one area or another
By approaching the subject from many angles and perspectives, offering respectful corrections, and accepting constructive criticism.
Plus in the olden (Boomer and before) days people with autism or ADHD got the belt and not therapy or help.
He had his inventions and tinkerings to get to
