Otaku culture and representations of it seem more focused on positive fandom that loves things as opposed to Western fandoms with their curdled, resentful white male possessiveness (most toxically on display in gamergate).

I think the main difference is Otaku don't instantly bring to mind 'Violent Misogyny' in the same way Gamergaters do.

'Otaku' can also cover being a hardcore fan of things non-anime. Princess Jellyfish has an interesting peek into this.

So I guess to me, I think of Otaku like I do Trekkies.

My understanding is that otaku shit has more to do with escapism and obsession which makes for a more interesting topic vs consumption as in group signifier which is just boring

I think he's saying much of otaku-focused media is neutral or even praising of the culture, making the otaku the hero and importantly not needing to learn or outgrow that mode of being in the world in order to be a hero, whereas bickle is not actually a hero and taxi driver is perhaps a critique

I dunno if American comics is the right comparison just because American comics are either superheroes or autobio graphic novels and not a lot of air in between. American Movies and tv shows about nerds are insanely popular tho. Big bang theory ran for longer than friends.
