Generally speaking I understand that Otakus are a subject of social concern in Japan but I just don't love books/media that are focused on them. Cannot imagine subgenres of American comics, eg, that were all about gamergate losers. Apologies if this is bungling some social dynamics

'Otaku' can also cover being a hardcore fan of things non-anime. Princess Jellyfish has an interesting peek into this.
So I guess to me, I think of Otaku like I do Trekkies.
My understanding is that otaku shit has more to do with escapism and obsession which makes for a more interesting topic vs consumption as in group signifier which is just boring
