Someone at a previous LI protest was lamenting absence of local media like News 12. People I was with said, "no wonder our neighbors are so ill-informed," "they still cover local, Elizabeth Hashagen goes to a new North Fork yoga studio every week!" Says a lot that it's above the fold 2 months later.
I've been noting which of our many national horrors makes it through to News 12 and which ones don't. And when I think about what any given Long Island Newsday covered in say, 1991, with what they cover now, it's SHOCKING.
We all rightly bemoan the loss of local media, swallowed by corporate, national interests. On L.I. it's not just a decline in local news, it's an abandonment of nearly all national and international news. Newsday used to have sophisticated, thorough coverage of national and international news.
remember when it was considered perfectly normal for a newsday reporter to travel to the australian outback in search of a story (and perhaps true love)
remember when they won a pulitzer prize for a massive investigation (33 articles!!) that traced the life of a poppy seed from a field in Turkey to heroin sold on the streets of nyc? (i don't it was the 70's but the point stands)
Yeah, Newsday still does commendable investigative work locally vs. quality of news in most regions of the US, but it's sparse beyond that. News12 was useless after they consolidated the regions. Then Altice, forget it, they can't find LI on a map & rushed ahead of the curve to inoffensive nonsense.
Agree about Newsday's investigative work, especially! I know News12 is garbage but there are some national news stories that I was shocked they completely ignored.
International news has all but vanished and national news is spotty. Nothing swooped in to fill the void. No one got NYT subscriptions because people want to know about the Italian Fair this weekend.
