This is how I feel when my friends fool around with AI image generators. I beg them to find artists that fulfill their particular niches, but they're like 'lmao nah'
so you're saying you want to murder suicide your girlfriend? not very funny. if you knew what the average woman went through in a day you wouldn't find this funny either. shame.
and like, it would be a different feel for me if ai generated imagery provided ANY KIND OF MONETARY COMPENSATION to the artist that it took from, but it doesn't. It just steals.
We really need technology to "DMCA" strike companies running these programs, since people can't help but be shitty
like I'd happily upload a piece a day into a database that generated art for customers... IF it paid me each time it used my work as an asset. omg And gave my refs. to the customer in case they wanted to comm. work
And actively sought out work being used without my permission! Like plsss!
I think the more realistic case would be to get a big compensation once for training the model with your images. I don't get how there was no huge legal backlash for OpenAI and others just using a bunch of texts and pictures without asking.
I'm a big supporter of AI tech, I love what it can do and think the outrage is way too extreme, MOST people are just playing around and having fun. That said, I support this idea for the most part, seeing as how AI is using established art as a reference for its generation.I think this is reasonable
Because our species always takes the chance to go as low as possible...and always hopes that our desire to be better is enough to push us out of the abyss
I half expected this to maybe look like a wolf. I guess i could specify that i want it to look like a wolf, I just dunno if I agree to using the tech at all.
i did it. I don't know, this kind of makes me feel equally like shooting myself
Fools rushing to give their likeness to a corporation for a caricature, when there's hostages that gave it to twitter afraid of leaving for being cloned. What short sigt.
βJust so Iβm clear- weβll be adorable Ghibli characters loved by all?β
βWeβll be the greatest characters, like-you know- the SNOW WHITE and those creepy little guys.β
Remember kids, AI Art is not protected by copyright laws. So if someone makes AI art and you need inspiration, steal that shit. Fucking take it and make real art with it. Love you all, keep drawing <3
I agree with AI skepticism but disagree with the statement itself. When using ANYTHING as reference, we should still exercise artistic judgement. AI can be a good tool to quickly visualize concepts to build off and inspire. We just need to remember AI is the tool, not the answer.
I'm far from the best painter, but below I did use AI to help quickly visualize how different scenes and poses evoked different feelings. I used all three as "references" but obviously did not include the wobbly rods or backwards feet. It's okay to use AI the same way we use Blender for pose assist.
I don't think AI should be the first answer to everything either. Anything in excess is a crutch. I do use pose references and real art studies first and foremost. During that painting I had a bunch of real photos of Kingfishers, bridges, and lakes. AI was only used to conceptualize atmosphere.
Stopping yourself from using any sort of aid to quicken a learning journey out of "legitimacy" is how pride stunts growth. It's the same way I encourage new artists to trace or copy by eye to grow and learn why certain things work and why others don't. You're not fake for using tools to learn.
People said the same about tracing for practice back when I was learning art. Public opinions have changed since then. I didn't use it back then, and I did get to be a pretty good artist! But it's not because of that, and I will never tell a learning artist that they won't be good if they do.
But it means you will never see or create anything new. All AI does is reproduce. It never creates. So unlike real life youβll never see something new to inspire you. Youβll never see something unusual as it shows you what it thinks you want. Art as creation grinds to a halt. Nothing but recycling.
Again, AI is just one tool that should only be used in conjunction with other tools. I would not recommend someone only study real life refs, or only study stylized cartoons. AI is the wrench not the motor.
I'm not saying AI=GOOD, I'm saying there's nuance and context matters. Pull yourselves together, jesus. Some of you don't seem to understand why AI is unhealthy, you've just been told it is and therefore ALL USE IS SIN. Please give it a good critical think before you click enter on the internet.
I hate that we're in the age of extreme opinions. You're either Yes or No, never any thinkers who actually look at the Why that often. People just believe what they're told. Especially if an AI told them (y'all got any more of that irony? need some to finish this irony man suitβ¦oh wait I need iron!)
Best not to use it as reference. I get the sentiment. They stole so steal from them in turn.
But using it as reference just makes them feel better about using ai, and they make more as a result. Which hurts more artists in turn. Best thing is to ignore it.
The easier it is for people to use AI to change photos into Ghibli style, then as time goes by, more and more people will get bored and move away or just throw them away because they are no longer considered exclusive due to mass production.
Honestly, what kinda sucks is that this is only really getting mainstream attention now that it's blatantly stealing from a corporate product. When it was stealing from regular artists the average Joe didn't care
Why is this worse than filters? Nobody seemed to mind "this filter turns you into an anime character/renaissance painting/etc". But now that it's AI, everyone's losing their minds. π€
Filters are also trash too though, they are decimating peoples (especially younger girls) self image. Its sad as fuck seeing my sister or whoever complain they dont have the edited bone structure or lip shape filters gave :(
because it is a direct and recognizable rip-off of a specific artistβs style whoβs on record calling AI βan insult to life itselfβ - these are not generic anime, these are specific studio ghibli style. without prior consent, or renumeration, i would guess.
True enough. I'd imagine the earlier filters did mimic, a style. Maybe close to what people think when they hear "anime". Be it, Ghibli, Ghost in the Shell or Astroboy. π€
Filters are created by artists and programmers they are not a black box plagerism machine trained on the stolen labour of every artist that's ever lived and somehow also consumes ridiculous quantities of resources.
Hereβs the thing β people who are doing this werenβt going to buy your art or pay for your creative work anyway. As an artist your value is in your future work, your future ideas. AI can only train on things that exist, and it can only create lesser derivatives of the work that exists. Go invent.
That is total bullshit. There are many magazines, web site and news orgs that. are already. using ai slop rather than pay illustrators like they used to. I know lots of web devs who no longer employ graphic designers and game devs who have stopped using concept & other artists bc ai slop is βfreeβ.
Those content machines were using stock photos and Fiverr wayyyyy before AI. They were also using βexposureβ as payment as well, for at least the last 20 years. Iβve been in the art and media game for a long time. AI is irrelevant, shareholders changed the game.
Too many people became βartistsβ and βdesignersβ because the software got cheap. People were hired solely because the person hiring didnβt know how to use photoshop or illustrator (etc). This is just another iteration. The mediocre creatives will have to move on. The cream will always rise.
At this point, I've become so embittered by people just playing along with a fucking nazi takeover like it's a normal thing that I'm actually okay with absolutely every AI user dying a violent death.
If they don't care about living, I don't care if they live.
Saying βLearn how to write promptsβ is like saying βlearn how to pick up a forkβ. Buddy, no oneβs getting left behind. Youβre preaching to people who have grappled with creation. We can learn how to prompt in a weekend. Sit tf down.
I doubt he's ready to roll over in his future grave over the equivalent of a snapchat filter in particular. ghibli-fication and the "cartoon 3d style" filter are exactly the same.
Either get retroactively pissed off, or STFU everybody.
damn, do you think that's the same? are you that warped? I'm not over here claiming that I made it, nor am I acting like screenshotting and cropping is creation. Nobody's credit is stolen. Those artists are already paid, and it doesn't encourage AI.
A filter that makes your photo into ghibli style is far different ethically than asking chatgpt to create something whole cloth. The former is appreciation. Only the latter is theft.
Or if you think both are theft, then get mad at other filters.
Seen outrage about it equally every time one of those became trending again, so not sure what you mean. A while back the Pixar one was trending and it got just as much backlash
You are an idiot who knows nothing about this technology, what was done to create it, and nothing about art, creativity, or creative integrity for that matter.
I have no need for shitty AI "filters" no matter what they do.
Shut your mouth before you embarrass yourself further.
Depends on how you cope. Have personally attempted a few times and seen/lived the devastation of someone who has died by suicide. Still make jokes to cope.
His quote recently should be a sign to everyone who has ever watched and enjoyed Studio Ghibli.
'Insult To Life Itself": Ghibli Founder Hayao Miyazaki On AI-Generated Art
Why are people okay with illegally stealing of the most wholesome anime movies styles to train AI on. I bet the training data wasnt even approved to be used that way as Hayao Miyazaki is fiercely against AI "art"
AI art is not art. For one to make art, there has to be an effort, one must learn stuff, it takes years. In terms of drawing, its anatomy, sketching, linework, color theory,... Etc. Art takes time, there is a thought process, it signifies something. AI art doesnt have any of this.
Programming is also an art. You have to have many years of practice, you have to learn the language, math, a thought process. You can programmatically create visual art,... patterns, randomness, noise, shaders,... You can visualize data. Math is also an art. But AI cant do art.
Saying AI "art" in the most condescending manner instead of "AI images" allows you to figure we are in-fact referencing a more specific problem, such as people illegally stealing people's works, both copyrighted and not, of artists (music, writing, digital, etc.), rather than generalized images
No actual artist would ever actually unironically claim the word ''art'' is truly fitting within the term ''AI art'', I do believe most of us only use that combination of words to make a point on how, it in-fact, isn't art.
no. the image is not about the distasteful animations which proceeded this conversation, but what followed; the notion of AI supplanting human drawings; read the image.
i didn't include this in the post but he ends it with "we humans are loosing faith in ourselves" --its not ambiguous.
Also, Miyazaki never talked about ableism. Having a zombie walking with its head "and having no concept of pain" while Miyazaki shared a very human story about a friend who can't even high five him is not ableism.
it really is just the principle of the human element, understanding, lens concious and unconscious when removed from art robs the artist, observer, and subject of inspiration
its not to say technology doesn't have a place; miyazaki selectively uses cgi. but AI in principle minimizes art itself.
My Instagram account got restricted for sharing this in my stories, because it depicts a βsuicide attemptβ.
Yeah, right. We all know why Meta doesnβt want us to share this one π
You're yelling at a hurricane. AI is only going to get more sophisticated. Pretty soon, nobody will be able to tell it apart from the real thing. What are you going to do then?
The worst part about this craze is that itβs not even the first time the βGhibliβ style has been AIβd. I hope Studio Ghibli sues the f*ck out of that company
From the way it's aimed and the type of gun it is, it should go through both of their heads. Idk if that was intentional but if it is, that's brilliant.
Me talking to my mom... sigh. She mentioned the ghibli AI to me today because I love ghibli. She loves the 'silly AI' no matter how much I tell her how bad it is and why.
I legit don't understand how you only have a chance of making people understand if they're a creative in some way. Those who don't make anything just see "silly AI" as with your example.
Our culture has programmed them into not viewing any act of creation that is not directed towards making someone a profit, but towards making something for the joy of making art as worthless. They literally cant see value in anything but the end product. Its like they're missing a part of their soul
Dude I feel you. Just a few minutes ago my friend who works at Wawa sent me a pic of him doing online me training & it had AI images for it. It was a company I worked at before & held dearly. The betrayal will not be forgotten.
Not to mention itβs disrespectful to all the hard work Hayao Miyazaki spent for decades making it only for AI to try and take it from him.
As he said himself: βItβs an insult to life itself.β
Trying to draw the art style itself either through traditional or digital means is more favorable instead.
Ai isn't a person, it's a computer, it isn't inspired by the artist, it takes art from them and uses the pixels to arrange something new by following the artist's patterns, it's like heavily referencing but worse, the art style isn't studied it's barfed up after being ate
I was skeptical at first, but AI continues to surprise me. It really is a "kind of" intelligence. To provide concise, often highly accurate and detailed replies means it somehow understands what was asked and how best to phrase the reply.
I believe that anyone who picks up a pen and dedicates some time can draw in the ghibli style.
This is Chihiro from spirited away. Notice the simplicity to make it easier to animate. There are no crazy eye shapes. It's simple. Pick up a pen instead of mashing together an AI Frankenstein monster.
I find it beautiful how studio ghibli takes the ordinary and makes it romantic. Just Sophie cooking eggs and bacon with Calcifer in howls moving castle is a beautiful scene.
I agree like the Ghibli art style isnβt even that complex in my opinion? I wouldnβt be the artist I am today if I didnβt copy anime pictures from the internet in middle school π
Anyways it's not just the simplicity to make it easier to animate- Ghibli has EXTREMELY strict character models. Something that AI famously can never, ever do correctly is make it's own consistent character model sheet for reference. It only understands Borg'ing shit up and self-cesting the output
LOL
On the subreddit for White Lotus somebody just posted some ghibli AI shit of 2 of the characters and everybody was flippin out (me included). It got so heated the thread was locked.
Next art lesson: Thou shalt not steal. A long time ago it was part of the religious curriculum, but nowadays the thieves say they are a gift to humanity and God wants them to be rich.

Like, why can't people just not be shit
We really need technology to "DMCA" strike companies running these programs, since people can't help but be shitty
And actively sought out work being used without my permission! Like plsss!
they'll be rich
the legal part is probably gonna be hell though... going after every company that runs generate ai imagery ain't gonna be easy
Which is troubling for more than one reason.
i did it. I don't know, this kind of makes me feel equally like shooting myself
βWeβll be the greatest characters, like-you know- the SNOW WHITE and those creepy little guys.β
But using it as reference just makes them feel better about using ai, and they make more as a result. Which hurts more artists in turn. Best thing is to ignore it.
Because this is the only acceptable route at this point lol
Enough with this AI tech dystopia.
If they don't care about living, I don't care if they live.
As an artist, you should live.
Now, about that ghost boy...
I've listened to his criticism of AI. he didn't like using it to try to create original stories with borrowed imagery. That's it.
Either get retroactively pissed off, or STFU everybody.
Or if you think both are theft, then get mad at other filters.
I don't think that you even know why you're mad.
All the artists are human beings, not just your golden child.
I have no need for shitty AI "filters" no matter what they do.
Shut your mouth before you embarrass yourself further.

'Insult To Life Itself": Ghibli Founder Hayao Miyazaki On AI-Generated Art
It is contradictory, but to make a point.
Fuck AI in tarnishing Studio Ghibi and I hope those people suffer the consequences of their dumb actions
....Yeah.
They're just...they're shiny and they make the fun noise and bounce in all sorts of ways
Ghibli style Me and Lover sounds like Perfection.
Sometimes it doesn't even look like ghibli
I hate the world
i didn't include this in the post but he ends it with "we humans are loosing faith in ourselves" --its not ambiguous.
its not to say technology doesn't have a place; miyazaki selectively uses cgi. but AI in principle minimizes art itself.
Yeah, right. We all know why Meta doesnβt want us to share this one π
I fuckin' hate the people who (effectively) own the Internet so much dude.
βWeβre leveraging AI-powered synergies to unpack the nuanced complexities of this pivotal disruption in the digital landscape.β
Bro, just say you asked Chatgpt while heating up your lunch. πΉ
Our shit-talking is here to stay too
It's not that hard
Hopefully, now you will understand the danger of AI!
The problem with all things: taking something that can be good or beneficial and transforming it to a tool for malfeasance!
AI = Plagiarism
AI = Plagiarism
AI = Plagiarism
AI = Plagiarism

I'm Anti theft-done-by-big-corporations
Big mood
That's the most likely outcome given where he's pointing that weapon.
Don't aim at your temple, people. It's extremely unlikely to do what you think it's going to.
I did a lot of research at one time, and that's basically why I'm here today. π
This is Chihiro from spirited away. Notice the simplicity to make it easier to animate. There are no crazy eye shapes. It's simple. Pick up a pen instead of mashing together an AI Frankenstein monster.
I know I am biased but I cannot understand how people don't feel the energy and power in every shot of the character
If it were anybody else idk if I'd assume that but...
On the subreddit for White Lotus somebody just posted some ghibli AI shit of 2 of the characters and everybody was flippin out (me included). It got so heated the thread was locked.

Arts should be a required course in school, not to train an army of Michaelangelos, but to develop appreciation for effort and craftsmanship
