I wrote angry about the purging of the US military. saideman.blogspot.com/2025/02/why-...

This week's nutty Toronto Mike'd recording schedule Today - Mike Stafford Monday - Bruce Davis (re: proposed shelter at Lake Shore and Third Street) Monday - Amin Bhatia Tuesday - Jesse Hirsh Wednesday - Stu Stone Thursday - Saukrates Friday - Cheri DiNovo

This Berenstain Bears lunchbox from 1993 captures a simpler time, before internet misinformation and social media, when the family computer primarily provided us with incomplete jigsaw puzzles, treble clefs, apples, and live fish

Admittedly "how do you feel about Trump's threat to invade", is better than "a polite conversation about what being forcibly invaded by a hostile power wouldmean to you"

@ianhanomansing.bsky.social & the CBC: Who is making you think this is the most responsible way to address a threat to Canada’s existence as we know it? Why are you not instead doing a show on the reality of what that might mean and all the reasons we DON’T want to be 51? My dudes 🤦🏼‍♀️.

Again: tech journalism is meeting this moment in a way the mainstream establishment newspapers and cable channels just aren’t. I can’t emphasize enough what a big deal this is.

VPN servers are sometimes in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, or Vancouver. We love Canada as a strong, safe, and beautiful independent country. So, Donald, from the bottom of our hearts and from our beloved Canada, we have a message for you:

"Many workers say they live in a constant state of fear, unable to trust their colleagues... reflexively engaging in self-censorship ... One team that works on issues related to climate change has gone so far as to seal itself off in a completely technology-sanitized room for in-person meetings."

another great example along with Wired and Teen Vogue of how real journalism these days can be a lot braver at outlets where no one is trying to get in good with the White House press secretary they’re out here with us, reporting on what’s happening to us all, instead of trying to get inside access

It's time to call it. AI is built on a house of cards of intellectual property violations starting with Facebook which is starting to look a lot like a crime scene as held back discovery documents begin to be compelled and unsealed in court. /1

"the point of being individually prepared is it positions you so well to help take care of other people"- @margaret.bsky.social in organizingmythoughts.org/lets-learn-a...

Rep. Grothman (R-WI): President Trump has done some very good things Crowd: Booooo

“Why aren’t people protesting?” Bitch we showed up for three weeks at children’s hospital and they caved and kids are getting their gender affirming care now from *checks notes* protests

The U.S. Postal Service stamp bearing Betty White's smiling face will debut on March 27.

i barely thought about Elon Musk until the Trapped Thai Schoolboys Incident, upon which it became extremely apparent he was both stupid and insane

This guy would’ve found a way to rationalize the layoffs as being necessary and good if he hadn’t been personally let go. This kind of person is incapable of having any empathy or understanding until it affects them.

NEW: The Energy Department tried to spin its DOGE-directed firing of nuclear-safety officials as affecting just non-critical staff. But this wasn’t close to true. In fact, one of the officials locked out of his work accounts was the top authority for all nuclear-safety matters in the agency.

If Russia hasn’t been able to occupy more than 19% of Ukraine since 2014, how can it defeat NATO or seize Europe? It’s impossible. Their plans are failing, their army is weakening. It’s time to stop Moscow in Ukraine. Ukraine’s victory is Europe’s security. The time to act is NOW

Just had an excellent interview with @advocate.com, and I really think this one is worth your time to read.

Update: The White House is already backing down on this. Keep calling your reps. Keep pressuring them. Along with your reps, the white house phone number is (202) 456-1111. Use 5calls.org to get all your reps in one place along with a guide. www.nysun.com/article/whit...

⚡️US threatens to shut off Starlink if Ukraine won't sign minerals deal, sources tell Reuters. The U.S. first raised the prospect of shutting off Starlink after Zelensky rejected the deal presented on Feb. 12. Starlink terminals are critical in securing Ukraine's battlefield communications.

I think the most wrong I have ever been as a political scientist was when I said in a public forum in 2020 that there would not be political violence in the US (Jan 6 was 2 mos later). Tonight’s purges are a clear precursor to more future such violence. This is textbook authoritarian abuse stuff.

Worst. Episode. EVER.

A good time to write to your MPs and reinforce that Canada's Starlink contract can, and should, be cancelled with just 30 days notice. Our own constellation of telesats, built by a Quebec aerospace company, begins launching next year.

If you're in a foreign country, you can no longer treat Starlink as a private service. Any dependence on Starlink by your people or government will be leveraged against you by the Trump Administration. The only solution is to do away with it and find an alternative.

I'm incredibly excited to announce that I'll be joining the Institute for Disease Modeling at the Gates Foundation in Seattle! I've long admired the Gates Foundation's impactful work in global health, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the terrific IDM team.

“Shortly after Friday’s exchange, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) announced that it launched a Title IX violation investigation into Maine’s Department of Education and one of its school districts.”

Donald Trump — The House resolution "implements my FULL America First Agenda, EVERYTHING, not just parts of it." The House plan slashes $880 billion from Medicaid—TRUMP OWNS THIS!!! Democrats need to speak out now—LOUDLY. Don’t Cut My Medicaid 📢

Gov. Mills showed precisely the sort of integrity in the face of political pressure that the majority of the party currently lacks. More importantly, she did so extemporaneously and without hesitation from a purple state where this isn't a universally popular position. www.maine.gov/governor/mil...

I signed!

Hey American friends especially…. please help get the word out to all of Canada! Musk’s bullshit up here must NOT be allowed to continue! #CdnPoli #FuckTrump #FuckFascism @charlieangus104.bsky.social www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en...

Ursula K. LeGuin on technology

I've been building and installing Corsi-Rosenthal boxes since the southern California wildfires were really bad a few weeks back and they've made a huge difference in my indoor air quality. Really highly recommend, should have done this years ago

"Six weeks ago, we had the strongest economy, employment, and stock market in history. ..All gone in 30 days."

Man I hate this motherfucker so much, this is gorgeous

This is a textbook disinfo op pivot, folks. Mute or block and move on. Just because Ivan can't afford the good troll farms anymore doesn't mean he's not still using them.

free hint to blue state govs: automatically offer jobs in your own state's security services to the various cops, prosecutors and armed forces members that trump is unfairly drumming out. you will need people with guns who hate trump for what is coming next, and... there they are

Very much like the Iraq War, somehow "I thought Elon Musk was a genius until a couple years ago" is now considered the more respectable and serious opinion than "I knew he was a fraud for a decade and was never fooled by him."

alright, for the evening crowd, i've got a rhythm worked out and have already had the opportunity to talk to a few of you. if you're interested in participating, read the write-up here and then holler at me using the instructions and we can figure out a time that works.

btw, i will tell you this - i have been talking to people all day, and the media is missing, whether intentionally or not, how absolutely, volcanically angry the people who have been fired are, not because they lost their jobs, but because their jobs matter, *to us*

This is key to understanding the building outrage & backlash that extends way beyond the hurt of those fired. Firing people for no reason is brutal & loathsome but the even larger overall offense is wiping out all the fired people’s jobs with them, all the purposes & needs & value those jobs serve.

Here's the statement on Ruby Dhalla's disqualification. She is currently on #PnPCBC claiming she was neck-and-neck with Carney, and this was done in order to give him a coronation.

This is very, very bad. Am working on a write-up, but let’s just say that firing military leaders for blatantly political reasons is wildly inappropriate; firing all the too lawyers is ominous; firing them all at the same time is a terrifying five-alarm fire

Really enjoying the stories about congressmen getting yelled at about DOGE shit in their town halls. Not because I feel like it's necessarily going to move things in the right direction in the next election cycle or two, really. I just like stories about congressmen getting yelled at I think.

Former Prime Minister Kim Campbell has signed the pledge for Canada. She joins thousands of leaders, artists, activists, Canadians who will resist the gangster in Washington. Have you signed the pledge to stand up for our values? True.North. Strong. Free. actionnetwork.org/petitions/pl...

As others have mentioned, the framing is the problem. But the scope is also way too imprecise. Because a legitimate answer to the question, as posed, is "indefinite guerilla warfare" and, uh, I doubt Ian and the CBC really wants to go THERE.
