Remember these well, used to drool over them in the Hornby catalogue. But Santa never seemed to get my letters. I did have a cousin who had the missile truck and exploding car. Missiles would sometimes ricochet if it was assembled too well.
As always the ubiquitous Hornby Jinty makes an appearance.

The 'exploding' car sort of fell apart rather than explode. Though it did depend on the how you assembled it. If you clipped it together too well it would remain impervious to missiles. Also after it got a bit worn it could 'explode' prematurely whilst just moving along.

That Jinty has featured in the Hornby catalogue since time immemorial. I believe they even produced a version with a bell and cowcatcher for the US market.

Looks like Hornby was influenced by Lionel here in the states. One of my biggest regrets as a kid was getting HO scale instead of O scale because Lionel had all the cool gimmicky cars. But I guess I could have imported some Hornby since they run on the same track.
