Love a good game OST but yeah it's vital to get a sample of other stuff at the very least.
Folks who only like one type of thing in any artistic medium always creep me out. "Oh I only read crime thrillers" "Oh I only play grand strat games" please, there is so much art out there to enjoy.
In my defense I refuse to use streaming services and Steam will sell me the MP3s sometimes. Other than that, bandcamp works but only for some artists, so my non-OST playlist is mostly just Red Vox and Lemon Demon with a bit of Car Seat Headrest.
I used to be this way. Then I got a car older than Bluetooth, so radio was my only option. Then I picked up a couple CDs. Quickly found rock and metal are my jam. Unfortunately, my younger sister is like this and it's hard to convince her to try new stuff
So many people dismiss stuff like anime OST as well, or indie bands. Like I had no idea how good music could really be orchestral wise until I heard Kevin penkins music
Yea I agree tbh. Like its cool if vgm is ur main jam but, much like how younger me only listened to bands like Metallica and Pantera, you're really limiting your taste if you don't at least try to get out of your music comfort zone imo.
I was in this exact same boat, but found that just like, starting with a song I know I like and just skipping through shuffle based on that til something vibed was a great way to find new stuff!
Agreed, honestly for me personally, I don't take recommendations from friends since my taste in music is usually a lot more different, but just having shuffle on like a mixture is a really nice way to find some new songs imo
I use spotify, but I know youtube has a "mix" feature when you're listening to a song that has a playlist chosen with random songs related to it. There could be something different and better though
I love music. I'm very happy with my relationship with music. But your sentiment is why I just tell people "Oh, I don't really listen to music" when they ask.
Do you think that someone who arrived at narrow interests on their own is guaranteed to get more happy if they had broader interests?
I don't want to fight. It's just hard enough already to carve out your own little happy nook. I do put effort into finding things to decorate it with, but it's never enough for others. There's only so many times other people can tell me my happy nook is actually sad before it starts to make me sad.
Same goes for anyone focusing on a singular genre or source at the expense of others. It’s not knocking what you know you like, it’s imploring you to broaden your horizons.
I need music without vocals while I'm writing and video game OSTs are pretty great for giving inoffensive music that can even be tweaked to fit the mood of the writing
Theres about a million instrumental playlists, albums, etc, out there.
I get why people like video game stuff, but oh my god, listen to more stuff if you only can recomend me the Undertale soundtrack
It’s funny because I don’t know why people don’t branch out: I liked NES music so I like chiptunes, I loved the Bomberman hero soundtrack and just turns out I love DnB/Acid Techno
I am perfectly fine with a video game introducing people to music
I think 90% of the reason folks know The Go Team is one of their songs being the little big planet menu music https://youtu.be/ht0yLJt7K4I?si=OA9ti9DIVkFoXCC9
Honestly, I only use YT and there's so much good indie shit there if y'know where to look. A lot of it filled with comments saying "plz put this on spotify already" lol.
Y'just gotta like. Look, and people who only listen to video game osts prolly aren't doing that, lol
Exactly.
Like, feck, if the only music you willingly seek out to listen to is music that you were forced to listen to while doing something else, idk, I feel sorry for people missing out like that.
Same here, not only am I using YouTube more often anyway, but the fact that it also applies to covers that aren’t official album releases is extremely nice.
My biggest gripes with Spotify is that it is so difficult to find the less popular artists, and how little they pay those less popular artists just because they don’t get enough listens. It’s a cheap and unfair tactic.
I have a select few video game OSTs that I like but most are based on existing genres of music. Like the wipEout ost is house or in Policenauts or Snatcher that has a jazzy sound to it. Metal Gear Rising is a genre all its own.
There are a ton of video games with fantastic osts and many I love.
But honestly, people telling me "I will only listen to/only listen to these" just is closed-minded
I'd feel the same way if someone was like, "I only listen to Pop/metal/whatever"
Reminds me of my friend from camp. When I told him that I didn't listen to rap he sat me down and explained that writing off an entire genre because of a stereotype was close minded, and cutting myself off from potentially great music. He rewired my brain that day, and I never got to thank him...
Yes, it’s good to diversify, but if you want certain people to embody the issue of limited music taste, using game OST diehards as the prime example poorly communicates that idea.
“I only like game OST” and “I only like metal” can mean very different things when the former isn’t bound by genre.
It's not remotely the *only* thing I listen to, but the convenience of just grabbing the soundtrack to a game I've enjoyed off Bandcamp or Steam without having to deal with DRM or streaming services means it easily constitutes the bulk of my collection.
Not to mention that playing the game inspires me to consider getting the soundtrack in the first place, and I spend more time overall playing video games than watching movies or listening to the radio. So y'know. A matter of statistical likelihoods.
Im jamming to some remastered Blind Guardian albums personally. I was on a rise against kick but I wanted to mix things up. and BG was my first band that *I* listened to independently from school or daycare or parents
I spent like five minutes trying to come up with a silly response, but I've got nothing. Instead, I'd like to ask what some of your favorite songs are!
I am very much not a wide-listened music person, the only artist on this list I've even HEARD of is David Bowie, never actually listened to his music xD
I felt this way in music school when other students would tell me they only listened to classical music. I'd feel so tempted to put a "kick me" sign on their back and give them a wedgie.
i've been going through my music collection and re-ripping old stuff recently, there's so much stuff to go through. of course i've got to listen to the rips afterwards to see if they're good. i listen to at least over 3 hours of music a day.
The problem is most of the popular songs released nowadays are far from my cup of tea. That doesn’t mean I don’t listen to older songs that aren’t OSTs, but that’s the reason why so many of them are.
Ordinarily I would agree. But I make one big exception in the Final Fantasy XIV Online OST because of their in-house band "The Primals" and that many of their hit songs are fully lyrical.

are you sure there's absolutely nothing wrong with it? like i'd recommend diversifying but if someone genuinely just prefers video game music i'll leave it be
I think the fact I've said multiple times to multiple different people that, I enjoy plenty of music from video games shows theres nothing wrong from it.
Im just saying people shouldn't box themselves in with their music choices for any genre
i think i misunderstood what you meant by "it" in the original tweet, sorry. if you meant listening to video game music at all, i get what you mean now. i thought you were saying there was nothing wrong with only listening to it, which confused me. i still think it's fine if other stuff was tried
One of my IRL friends is like this only with dubstep. Now compare that to my playlist: one second its stuff like kendrick lamar and asap rocky, then midwest emo, then pink floyd, then hyperpop lol

Search for an artist
Buy a CD and get it shipped to you
The other 10% is anime and cartoon soundtracks
Stuart Copeland for example, if you cross over to his work with The Police, it's a fast way to get into a broader taste in music
Some video games have some incredible bangers uwu
Im just asking that people who say they *only* listen to stuff from video games listen to different stuff
Granted im in a tough position as most music with vocals is just not that appealing to me and BGM often doesn't have vocals
I usually either listen on YouTube, khinsider, or if I like a song enough I'll download it and put it in my master mp3 list.

Yes
But I would never recommend them outright

Even before then I had an mp3 loaded up with ozzy Osborne and ac/cd as a kid
