Pearl is good but largely because of the lead, Dalgliesh is slow-paced but well-told, Ellis was excellent and a total surprise for me and Chelsea is okay but my least favorite of this group. I recognize UK TV is built a bit different than US but ultimately end up watching more shows from there.

I feel like many detective genres (Holmes, Poirot) are anti-copaganda in that the official police are portrayed as bumbling idiots, and the independent detectives often choose to skirt the law in the pursuit of moral justice.

The shows spotlighted here are "Whitstable Pearl" (a private eye who runs a beachside seafood restaurant); "Dalgliesh" (a policeman who is also a poet! + a 70s setting); "Inspector Ellis" (when the local police screw up, she's called in); "Chelsea Detective" (takes place in Chelsea area of London)

What little I've seen of DALGLIESH...*chef's kiss*. Still have fond memories of Roy Marsden's Dalgliesh when those PD James adaptations aired on MYSTERY back in the late 80s and 90s.

So Acorn has just announced that Matthew Lewis, best known as Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter movies, has been cast to star in a new murder mystery series called “Murder Before Evensong” based on the book (I’m not familiar with it) playing a church rector
