Terrific book. I teach it in my methods course. I also teach courses on war and terrorism but this is the first book I ever included a trigger warning for. It’s powerful.

I told Timothy that I studied the leather and footwear commodity chain and I am also a leather scientist and technologist. When I went to pick up a cow hide for my final tanning exam, I went to the slaughterhouse to pick one. I saw the process and immediately fainted. It was so difficult to see.

One of the best books who uses ethnographic writing without being an actual ethnography OF something/someone/somewhere is "Pollution is Colonialism" by researcher extraordinaire @maxliboiron.bsky.social

Max is an incredible writer and PiC is a fantastic book.

I tend to befriend and interact a lot with medical anthropologists, so many of my recommendations often focus on hospital ethnography.

I am also a public administration scholar, so citizen-state interactions are definitely of interest to me: frontline workers, street-level bureaucrats, etc.

In the end, as I finished my Writing Ethnography Master Class, I mentioned that the best way to write better ethnographies is to READ amazing prose.

Personally, I LOVE my own writing. I know it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I DO love it. And I work EVERY SINGLE DAY to improve my written prose.

I have been teaching Tim’s work to my PhD students since HE was a PhD student. It’s terrific, and so nice to be able to say “A political scientist did this. You can too.”
