We're going to lose Canada and Mexico and Europe very, very soon if Trump and Vance aren't careful after this Zelensky disaster. I don't expect they will be careful. We're about to be on a geopolitical island in the middle of North America.

In fairness, I don't think the political class has internalized this anger. E.g, ford in Ontario winning re election in a plan that would actually increase our trade with the us, or others pushing for Keystone XL. Posturing aside I'm not sure there's a serious reckoning by politicians yet.

I think that unless you've lived in the US you can't really understand how insular the country is. The population as a whole really, really, has no knowledge of other places because they quite literally never have any exposure to them.

There is such a thing as the "geography of ignorance" which looks at why certain places have a level of what might be considered ignorance, while others are not. You can hypothesize about how that might be superimposed on the US states, and you would probably be right.

My employer’s HR department is in Houston and we literally have to explain that Canada is a different country with different employment laws (times the 4 provinces we work in) every single time. Their response is always something like “sorry we forgot again”.

The weirdest thing is the border! They have no curiosity about what happens on the other side either and they have like getting a passport is this weird ordeal that’s near impossible to get.

It doesn’t help that local services treat the border like this radioactive no touching zone.
