Believable. We're south of Chicago and a new rescue kitten was going to cost over $400 to be neutered, shots, etc - nope. Found a much better vet we're happier w/who charged around $60.
Yes, it was a relief - not just because of lower fees, but much kinder, calmer 'bedside' manner. Somewhat relieved, but still shocked to see it's everywhere now. When an older pet needs to be put down, $300/400 is a gut punch on top of the grief.
Same. Costs had climbed at our vet but we'd been through it 8 yrs prior/same clinic; at that moment, the $ wasn't even on our minds - 20 mins later when they gave us the bill w/a guilty look on her face I was sure there'd been a mistake. A new charge of $65 alone for walking in the door? Nope. Bye!
That's rough - luckily, it was easy for us to walk away; in the midwest, cats in particular are seen by many vets as little more than somewhat necessary, but disposable 'livestock' - luckily, younger Drs are much more versed, familiar & partial to them.
1 dog. I go to clinics or pop-ups for shots. $125. I do have insurance for $70 a month. Mostly for/if injuries. But that's $1,000 deductible, for $10,000. No vet appts/shots/wellness checks etc.
Not sure if you have the pop-ups or clinics in your area (at the pet stores) usually here. Petco or Petsmart have them. Or sometimes the smaller local pet stores.
I took 3 in for same and one had itchy skin and another had an ear infection and it was $1200. And that’s probably because it’s independently owned. I almost went to vet school—but they have the highest suicide rate of any profession. Overworked, underpaid, and burnt out by private equity ghouls!
