Or perhaps look at the quality, funding and opportunities in what comes before school. The infrastructure of pre school EY support is a shadow of its former self and an incredibly pronounced postcode lottery.

Absolutely, I spend my days fighting for places for children in PVI settings and even stay and play groups. Health visiting support is almost non-existent in this area and children are falling through the cracks

I think at the moment you could argue it's making cracks - what could have been addressed with effective early intervention ends up being a much bigger deal when they get to school age.

Definitely, I think it is right for us to have expectations that most children by Reception will be toilet trained, able to feed themselves reasonably well and able to attend to an activity for a few minutes, but we need to be flexible for those that can't. This is what's missing.

We also need to look at the expectations for academic learning for children at the end of the EYFS. They are overloaded in school, some thrive but many just can't.

There's a fine line with this. For some that needs to be carefully adapted and considered. For most no. Very quickly expectations slip and excuses creep in around what children can achieve which disproportionately impacts disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND.

Yes this is a very interesting point. I do feel that expectations of children with SEND are too low at times, I can see that if expectations are lower generally, this may have a further negative impact.

I think most settings have really positive intentions around this. What they sometimes lack is expertise and mindset around what can be achieved. Often the inflexibility around approach reflects what is actually a weakness in methodology and pedagogy. Can't change what you don't really understand.
