Here's a hail mary of an idea: Nature vs Nurture.

For example, in-door cats. Every cat I've ever owned has been a pretty good hunter. The problem is, if it isn't bite sized, they don't understand that it's food. Without that exposure to "kill and eat", they only seem to know "play".

They'll catch a mouse, be confused it's still fighting, drop it, and chase it again. For hours. My current cat has never killed anything but bugs, but routinely tries to square up with ducks.

Also: the "bird chirp". I doubt it was learned, the other cat doesn't do it. So it feels instinctual to me.
