Do not put your name on a list. Wear an N95 mask. Cover identifying marks like tattoos. Wear nondescript clothing. One reason for black bloc tactics is that 30 people dressed identically makes it hard to identify any of em.
If your hair is dyed a non-natural color, cover it. Anything out of the average range, including hair color, graphic Ts, unusual hats—all these can be used to identify people.
Given the use of irritant gases, maybe wear clothes you won’t mind discarding later.
Also make sure you have a PIN passcode on your phone and not facial recognition or thumbprint. Apparently there's a difference between the PIN and biometrics when it comes to police demanding you unlock your phone...
Do not take pictures at protests. Don't even take your actual phone with you. Write your lawyer's number on your stomach where clothing will cover it, not your arm. HAVE A LAWYER or at least know where to get legal help.
Remember: you will not get to decide if a protest is non-violent. The cops will. You can decide what actions you will take but nothing you do will stop them from gassing you, firing "less lethal" rounds at you, and otherwise brutalizing you before and after they arrest you.
Do you have to call a lawyer or could I just call somebody I know (and is expecting the call) and have them call a lawyer instead?
I have no real idea of what actually happens when you get arrested at a protest.
Depends on where you are, the National Lawyers Guild may be a good place to start if you are not already tapped into a network of lawyers who can ask around for you.
I was part of a counterprotest group that was peaceful, we ran into a black bloc group that turned violent towards the protest that we were protesting against, I tend to be wary of those that dress like that, if only due to that experience
