That sounded harsher than I intended. I just mean people dismiss movies that I see all kinds of meaning in because they allow space for interpretation, which I think can be more rewarding than having an obvious message.
People would be better off saying that they just didn't feel engaged. I was recently thinking about Dunkirk in the same way. Clearly a lot of thought went into it but I wasn't on the movie's wavelength.
Movies are made of a lot of parts and by lots of people, so there is always a lot to think about them. But sometimes, they do have an obvious message, and that happens to be trite. Sometimes it is so trite that it betrays the effort of the many people involved. Triangle of Sadness.
