I keep having patients come in who will decline vaccines like the Tdap saying they don’t want to poison themselves but then report taking antibiotics as needed for things like a runny nose or common cold… or won’t finish the abt series but take it as needed, etc. then come back w/ a worse infection

It’s truly concerning how some parients decline vaccines due to unjustified fear of 'toxins,' while antibiotics are simultanously misused for viral infections and "runny noses" leading to resistance and worse outcomes.

I think that education is a big step in helping people understand antibiotics more. This study couldn't include the people who bought/ used animal antibiotics because of the "Walking Dead" and their own "research". Also not finishing antibiotics to "save for later". Which you know the implications

My wife is a elementary school teacher, and having only empirical evidence to draw upon, I can tell you that children often come to school sick because families misunderstand the importance of staying home or mismanage antibiotics, using them unnecessarily or stopping them too soon.

Even though this may be true, the problem runs deeper and has been happening for a long time. If you eat beef, you have been micro dosing antibiotics most of the time, which is the leading cause of antibiotic resistant bugs.

You're right that antibiotic use in agriculture, incl. beef prod. plays a role in AMR. But the largest recent incr. in antibiotic consumption comes from human medicine in LMICs, driven by pop. growth and better healthcare access. Addr. AMR requires tackling both human and agricultural use together.

AMR incidence and not AMR ITSELF, is due to increase in access to antibiotics in LMICS. AMR will always be around if people/industry misuse it or the medical profession abuses it for profits. AMR is nature's way of adapting and surviving.
