If Labour really don't want to go for a full PR system, then they should go for the Australian model - compulsory voting and AV, which has been shown to still be very capable of delivering majority governments. Something that makes our compulsory voting system really work is also having preferential voting. I’d say you really need to have both to get the full benefits we see over here.

Nah, we don't for the most part. Northern Ireland does, but that's it. We used to have it in England for local and regional mayors, but the Tories scrapped that.

I agree and think it's a good idea anyway. Personally I'd prefer STV, but as I say if Labour are too anxious about the proportional element of that then AV will do.

They won't though, for a couple of reasons. In part selfishness because yes, it probably would reduce the *magnitude* of majorities and they're antsy about that, but perhaps even more so because they're fundamentally cowards who don't want to rock the boat.
