Good intentions or not, this kind of thinking turns reading into a chore and leads to not reading as an adult. Even "real literature" was often the "dessert book" of its day. I love Shakespeare, but if we're honest it's still mostly fart jokes wrapped in pretty words. - ThreadSky

I was the only person who ever enjoyed Shakespeare and really understood it (which my English teacher at King George was thrilled by in my final year). But yeah, this is a bad way to get kids to continue reading. It's also how to create reading snobs :/

Honestly I think the joy of Shakespeare requires reading a play in full or seeing it performed before dissecting it line by line in class. The dissection is important (comprehension, media literacy, context, etc)... but it does ruin the jokes.

Yeah, I loved Much Ado About Nothing. Did that one at a different school before I moved, but we watched the film with Keanu Reeves in it & I thought it was great. We also did Romeo and Juliet and watched the one with Leo Dicaprio which I also enjoyed

And this may just be me as a queer writer/artist but having a teacher who doesn't shy away from those elements in his plays doesn't hurt either.

I had this but with the teacher on my final year who didn't shut me down if I thought of something they hadn't thought of as an interpretation. Very ND friendly teacher even though I hadn't been diagnosed at that point
