We are hosting a refugee from Kharkiv who came to US to further law studies after finishing her masters in Leiden, despite having her UA scholarship pulled in the first days of the war. She quit her job helping build war-crimes cases to come here. Now she may have to go back w/o either job or study.

It wasn't a refugee program either. Just visitor status and a work permit. You have to leave when the work permit expires, usually, after 3 years unless you renew it, which is its own can of worms, as it's an open work permit that normally cannot be renewed.

The program for open work permit renewal is still running until March 2026. But only if you landed in Canada before a certain date. You are still able to change your status via regular pathways, but most of that is closed right now due to "too many immigrants" complaints.
