On the hiring side, timing is hard because you'll have e.g. multiple promising candidates, but 1 finished interviews 2 days ago, 1 has 3 interviews to go but the HM thought they seemed perfect & has some FOMO...
Last company I got hired at, the recruiter was extremely forthcoming with timelines (and adjustments to timelines) so I never once wondered whether I was still in the running.
I made sure to give both direct and manager feedback about how amazing that was and how I wished it was standard.
💯💯 More companies should be transparent like that. There are several points when this information could be communicated, whether during recruiter call, before or after the final rounds, async or not. Sadly 2 companies I got to final rounds didnt do any :(
