It's why the Metropolitan Police was founded in the 1830s.
To protwct the interests of the crown....
Now, while we aren't under a crown any more, they never stopped using that as their focus
A NYC cop I went to HS with deplored the "violence" of the protests at Trump's inauguration. His example? A burning limousine. No evidence anyone was in it, but someone had damaged a symbol of Capital.
Cops are the employment version of the paradox of tolerance. They are not workers. It's easy to see they do not labor, but steal the fruit of all labor.
you're right on and we see them, once we've been alerted to it, in many places where change is both critically needed and strongly advocated. People do the work of the system and they shouldn't.
I think one of the reasons police involvement has crowded out other public services must have to do with the reality that no other institutions are trusted to enforce the needs of capital.
Ironically cop unions are probably the most politically effective unions in America. One should ask why that is. Probably because capital deems them essential.
As well, people should dig deeper into what police unions and union reps actually do. The Portland Police Association might be a good place to start learning.
There are plenty of alternative means of keeping the peace aside from modern policing.
Cops in NYC right now start at $45k a year and teachers start at $66k a year. So while what you’re saying is true in many places, it’s a little less the case in NYC, at least for starters. But when we factor overtime, a much more generous pension, etc, cops do better long term.
That not uncommon. I’m just saying what the starting salaries are in nyc. Many towns, especially outside major cities, spend far more on police than anything else.

Cops do not actually protect people except in a VERY secondary fashion - protection of a person AS PART of protection of a thing, money, or ideal.
Big ACAB.
Poor people being killed is an expected and acceptable part of that order; rich people being killed is not.
