When I was in law school, one of my classmates made fun of me for having only the vaguest awareness of who Stephen Sondheim was (what a rube lmao)

But I definitely knew Les mis (admittedly primarily because because my mom kept it on repeat in the car during the years I was approximately 11-13)

I could see it being possible he saw the Sweeney Todd movie when it came out in 2007 but has little interest in musicals otherwise. I’m about his age and I saw Sweeney Todd but never Les Miz.

Probably more likely he made it up but since the premise of his joke is true for me I can’t rule it out.
