I tried treating them with understanding, but their madness is beyond comprehension, and they still got very upset. Now I treat them with nothing but gleeful derision and scorn. My sanity is much improved, and they are still the exact same level of very upset.
They know he's a vile man - dishonest, mediocre at everything, spiteful, etc. They support him because of what they hope he will do, despite those deficits, so pointing them out *in him* yields nothing. Ditto for policy talk. OTOH, reminding them of what they have in common with him really stings.
Many of them don't have a lot to lose and/or lack impulse control and a solid grip of cause and effect, so the outcome is unpredictable, making the risk/reward sketch.
