Thinking about this AGAIN.

I hope Bluesky has a fantastic legal team. Because the more popular it becomes, the more of a target it will be to Musk/Trump.

If you're here, congrats. It's a better, safer place to be than Twitter, Meta, or TikTok now, imo.

But no social media site is guaranteed to last.

As always, if it's impt to you, I recommend having a personal website and newsletter/email list that you own/control so folks can always find you.

If you want to maintain a social media presence no matter what, I recommend opening a Mastodon account. Yeah, I know. But I think it's still the least likely service to be destroyed by a billionaire or political actor.

It's worth noting that both Buffer and Publer offer free services that allow one to post concurrently to multiple social media networks. I use it to post to Bluesky, Mastodon, and/or Instagram; if you want more than three services, they have paid plans.

but my heart is really there. Bluesky is nice, but it has the feel of something that would be too easily coopted in a way that Mastodon never will.

Agreed. I love Mastodon. Real people who interact with one another, not just isolated large accounts talking "at" people.
Also, the option to follow only an account's original posts (for those who boost a lot) and mute someone for just a few days if they're getting to be too much.

You can also do a hosted WordPress on ionos or whatever for a couple bucks a month. Should be much better than the official .com.

I don't know for sure what you can do for plugins because I have multiple sites on a VPS.

Yeah, I've got https://gregpak.com on https://wordpress.org installation. https://gregpak.net's on https://wordpress.com, and it's fine. got my smaller static sites on https://neocities.org, which is a blast.

I'm just savvy enough to run a Ubuntu server so it's basically as many low-traffic sites as I like. So all our properties and I'll probably consolidate my mastodon instance at some point.
