If someone has only been exposed to the X-Men via movies and animated series, I like to recommend Dennis Hopeless and Jamie McKelvie's X-MEN: SEASON ONE as a good read to get a handle on how they started out.

I love how Morrison’s run simultaneously pays tribute to Claremont/Byrne/Cockrum and argues for the need to evolve past it. Not the first or last time reading Morrison comics felt to me like watching a great magic trick being performed.

I would add: It depends very much on what you mean by "get into." Morrison/Quitely's run is a great first read but won't, for instance, prepare you to jump into current continuity or give you a ton of backstory if either of those are what you're after!

Morrison was my first serious attempt at the comics after a lifetime of familiarity and the cartoons. It ended up working but that was mostly the Whedon run as a follow up that’s a lot better about backstories and connections to now.

It might not help you understand X-Men continuity, but it's the best version of the X-Men that you could possibly read.
