As someone who started programming by programming iOS apps when Swift 1.0 came out, I went into this years WWDC with a bad outlook. Their anti consumer practices have gotten insane, they’ve been hostile, and after Siri’s flops, I thought this would be the end.

would have had more time for LLM Siri and would’ve had a much better ecosystem in place for when they launched it. Then LLM Siri would’ve been on-time and they wouldn’t have made a huge flop.

But no, they let Wall Street dictate it and that’s what happened. Hopefully they learned their lesson…

Reminds me of the times Steve Jobs would pause during his keynotes to celebrate Apple's commitment to being at the crossroads of liberal arts and technology. I'm glad that approach is still alive at Apple, because AI for consumers isn't a buzzy new platform, it's an enabler to be more productive

OpenAI has effectively conned people into thinking that Chatbots & AI "Assistants" are The FEWTCHA of AI. Friends, they are most likely *not.* Neither are the big cloud-based Generative AI services.

I hope the "Ask" button for on-screen visual intelligence eventually uses an on-device model, or at least a model managed in the cloud by Apple.

I think it will, since they already demonstrated a confined version with the quick add to calendar where it auto extracts the details.

Visual Intelligence appears to be using Apple's Secure Compute capability, which is architected in a really interesting (and secure, private) fashion. And the Foundation Models Framework is encouraging Devs to use that same capability in *their* apps to avoid "going out" for AI. It's interesting.

For sure. I suspect they'll open that part up to multiple providers soon. Not sure they want to invest in doing that on their own. I was thinking about the image recognition within apps and leveraging app intents to create workflows from that, which is a better way to execute that than Siri.

If Generative AI ends up "succeeding" at all, you won't really even notice it's there. It's not going to hit you over the head with USE YOUR AI ASSISTANT TO...

You'll just find more and more interesting uses for your existing devices. Perplexity, etc will just replace Google Search in your browser.

AI coding assistants? That functionality just gets baked into existing coding tools. Vibe coding is amusing, but creates so much security exposure, technical debt and liability that it's more Graphic Design is my Passion than anything.

Most AI coding tools are not Vibe-Oriented.

Apple is (largely) getting it right on AI, and at the right pace. But if you've been Stockholm Syndromed by OpenAI and Anthropic, I can understand why you would have a hard time seeing this.

Again, I was heckling Apple a good deal during yesterday's keynote. But not about AI.

I think that's right. I tend to think we're approaching the top of the capabilities curve now, and the remaining frontiers are efficiency (how much can we do on local device compute) and orchestration (how well can we get a variety of purpose-built small models to work together). The rest is hype.
