I also read the report and had the same reaction - clever lawyer trying to find a way out. I thought the report was generally fair and well reasoned. They say the range of penalties for this type of offence was a 6-12 match ban, and the offence was considered at the less serious end of the spectrum.

I'd say not clever lawyer and extremely poor advice. It is painfully obvious his defense is a weak attempt to wriggle out of the charge and someone within the club should have had the courage and agency to speak up about how bad it would look. It suggets a level of dysfunction within the club.

Unless the primary motivation is as @notthatmilo.bsky.social says to delay the ban. The club making a risk-based judgment that, what with the tabloid nature of football news, the blowback from this will be far less than a string of bad results in tough games in part thanks to Bentancur being out.

The club have issued a statement saying that they are not seeking to delay the ban whilst they appeal. I think that the only scope for shortening it is from 7 games to 6, so it feels like a really odd decision

Yeah I really don’t like how this has played out. He said something stupid and offensive, apologised, and is now rewriting the narrative to reframe his motivations. The club shouldn’t appeal unless rules have been wrongly applied which seems not to be the case

What are they saying? I agree, based on precedent it is an extreme ban, but the club and Bentancur should accept it as setting a new standard and move on. Of course we should expect similar bans for similar incidents in future, but challenging based on previous lower standards is cynical and wrong

Have to say I was surprised by Nathan’s take on the pod. Always felt like a “lawyers defence”. Bentancur only apologized when he realized the outcry. Club should have given him a 3 game ban and mandatory education at the start of the season, then they would have a leg to stand on.

For the club to be appealing — even if it is just about the length of the ban rather than the substance — is beyond dispiriting. Senior Spurs officials would do well to listen to Ben Davies: it's a serious matter, handled seriously. Time to move on.
