The thing that really gets me when it comes to "AI threat" is how off the mark these people are.

The threat is not some decades off sci-fi movie. The threat is how idiots are using it now, eg state department using 'AI' for revoking visas, predictive policing, etc etc.

As a general rule, adding AI to a process trades off accuracy for speed. When you have it employed by careless, malicious idiots, it just means they can do their damage at a breakneck pace.

Yeah not to bring it back to the death knell that was Worm Wars but this is the same shit that destroyed Effective Altruism. It was a useful movement until it started disappearing up its own arseshole about how to effectively mitigate the threat of imagined future global apocalypse scenarios.

Why is “spent” in quotes? Did we actually spend 4% of GDP in dollars or is this economic impact? Was it all spent to mitigate deaths or was it more indirect; like relief payments for lost jobs/ppp/etc. If it’s indirect spend then isn’t this an arguing to spend on relief for workers displaced by AI?

Also what about asteroids lol. Or an actual risk like climate change. Risk calculations need a probability of the event. We can think of a lot of existential risks and any spending can be justified.
